It seems that it is time to sell my finest 45-70 rifle. This I do with a certain amount of regret, but after nearly 40-years of shooting heavy 45-70 loads from the bench and in the field, my shoulder simply will no longer allow heavy recoil. The battle of the rotator cuff has been lost, and therefore I need to sell this rifle.

The one I’d like to sell is a Brockman-enhanced Marlin 1895SS with many Brockman improvements. The rifle has a laminated birch (as hard as woodpecker beak) stock installed by Brockman (configured so as to place the shooter’s eye in the proper position for looking through a scope), as well as a full-length magazine. The trigger has received much work, and is very smooth and free of creep. The gun also has an enhanced case extractor. The rifle has had its cross-bolt safety disabled, so as to avoid any problems with a gun that has accidentally been placed on safety, and will not fire when the hammer is back and the trigger is pulled. The rifle is topped with the best scope I have ever owned, and Leupold 1.5X5 power variable, built on a 30mm tube (not the smaller, standard 1” tube). This scope has illuminated cross hairs for low-light shooting, and sets low on the rifle. The rifle also has a LimbSaver recoil pad. The rifle has a normal lever installed, but comes with an additional larger-loop lever, for those occasions when cold weather gloves are required. The gun has also been tuned by Brockman for the smoothest possible chambering.

This rifle is in as good a shape as it was when I got it back from Brockman. It has been used only on one hunt, during which I took a bison. In fact this link: http://www.garrettcartridges.com/031001.ASP (on our Commentary Page) will take you to a photo of the rifle (top), laying on top of the bison robe it accounted for during its one foray into the “wilderness.” (One note on the photo, it appears in the photo that there is a spiral in the barrel. This is simply a digital photo phenomena that occurs when the photo is viewed at less than 100%) Also, as a final touch, I will include four boxes of any of our three 45-70 Hammerhead loads, and will also pay for shipping to the buyers FFL agent.

I am asking what I have in the rifle, which is $2000.00. Again, this includes a bonus of 80 rounds of Hammerheads, which normally sell for $320.00.

This is a great rifle in outstanding condition. It has all the tricks that Brockman could pull from his famous “bag of tricks”, and is a real show-piece. Interested parties can contact me at Randy@GarrettCartridges.com.

I replied to my scope FS thread and it moved above this one but this one belongs at the top.

If I could sell my 29 & 627 posted here, I would be tempted to buy your rifle Randy. . . Sorry to hear about your shoulder - but I'm understanding that after surgery you could be in better shape than you think. And I know you've shot a big bore with a mercury butt stock insert - makes my 450 seem like a 30-30.

I'm sorry to hear that you felt the need to sell, but having made that decision, I'm pleased to hear that you were successfull. That was a tempting package, and I was starting to think stupid thoughts about how I just MIGHT be able to make buying it happen.

Darned border and darned US export regulations.

Now, what about the other one, the shiny one? Torment me some more, why don't you? icon_cheers.gif  icon_cheers.gif

Hi5,

Well you have identified what is the obvious question I am facing, whether or not to keep the Brockman/Marlin Guide Gun. I know I need to avoid heavy recoiling rifles, and obviously the Guide Gun kicks more than the full length rifle, but whether my mental health will allow both of those guns to disappear in rapid succession is the question. If I decide to sell it I will post it only on this website. I may look for an alternative, however, like perhaps going to murcery stock inserts, or whatever the latest craze is, and simply shoot my lowest power Hammerhead, the GOVT load, or even developing a 350-gr Hammerhead which I could drive to a moderate speed and reduce recoil considerably. Actually a good 350-gr SuperHardCast Hammerhead has alway intrigued me. I suspect that much more consideration is required. Hmm.... Maybe I should come out with a commercial Hammerhead load using a 350-gr SuperHardCast bullet at about 2000-fps for those wanting a lot of power, and perhap a reduced load pushing the same bullet to about 1700-fps. More later.....

Hey Randy. I had gatlinguns install a mercury recoil reducer in one of my .416s and I will have to say it did a good job. I would consider it before parting with the other gun. As far as a 350gr bullet contact BABore on this forum. He already cuts molds for a WFN 350gr that is near perfection. I have played with the WFN and WFNHP versions and they are flat out awsome. Even at 1700fps they would kill anything on this continent and most of Africa. reflex264

Hey Reflex,

I'll either pursue recoil reduction via the mercury recoil reducer, or simply shoot a lighter bullet such as a 350-grainer at the same speed as my GOVT Hammerhead Ammo, 1650-fps. I don't expect to be going after anything bigger than Washington black bear, so major power is not required. Actually, I am tempted to simply put the long guns away, and use the revolver. I'm especially fond of a couple of custom 44 Magnum Bisleys I have, and they would be just right for the brushy terrain of western Washington.

Whatever you do keep hunting. The mercury reducer probably reduced felt recoil by 10%-15%. Enough to take some of the sharpness off of that particular rifle. I feels like a really hot loaded .375 now which is more tolerable. reflex264

How much weight do those mercury recoil reducers add? I do know that a 550gr bullet at around 1300fps feels a lot nicer in my 12 pound Sharps than the same bullet in my much lighter Ruger #1  .

Can someone tell me if that's a full 22 inch barrel, or was it chopped to 20 inches?
