Well, it looks like Hank has the big bore end handled. So I'll start the small bore ball rolling.

As some may rmember I recently picked up a Single Six. But I want the barrel shortened to 4 5/8". The smith I used for years retired earlier this year. But luckily I've found a new guy that is almost as close and comes highly recommended.

So that takes care of the first mod. Next, I want to address the rear sight. Age and loss of visual accuity makes using the standard notch and post less than optimum. Who has tried what, and how has it worked out?

You might try this. I haven't yet but plan to.

http://www.oneraggedhole.com/The_RUGER_One_Hole_Sight.htm

In the mean time I use weak reading glasses to shoot. That is my normal reading glasses are 2.00 dopter and I wear 1.00 dopter to shoot. With them I can see the sights with my arms extended, but the correction is not so strong as to blur the target. It has really improved my handgun shooting.

You will have to experiment to see what power works for you but start with half power compared to your reading glasses. I had some bifocals made that are 1.00 and 2.00 so I can load gun and other things with out changing my glasses.

Hank, I've got the ORH on my .45 colt Blackhawk. Works pretty good. I'm sure it would work on the little gun. But I thought I'd throw this out to see what I might have missed.

Yes, any time you can look though an a peep sight it increases your field of focus which is the usual weakness of those of us with old eyes. I think I will order a couple ORH's. One for one of my BFR's and one for my model 92.

You might try the reading glasses deal. It works great for me and reading glasses at Wal-Mart are cheap. I like to wear eye protection when shooting handguns anyway. I buy the full size readers rather than the thin ones for shooting.

I can't hit the broadside of a barn without my glasses..I only wear them to drive but with pistols,to be accurate I have to wear them.

How would a Ghost Ring type rear site work on any pistol?

that is basically what the ORH is. Check the link in my post above.

Me bad..I didn't look at the link. How do those seem to work with old eyes?

If a guy got something like that, how hard would it be to adapt to say a BFR rear?I like the idea but not having looked through one,I am cautious about ordering one made for a Ruger.

I haven't used them yet but see jeepnik's comments above. He has used them on his Ruger 45.

Here is your answer for your BFR.

Well heck, Ranch beat me to a photo. Ron, these sights a really good for old eyes that don't shift focus as fast as they used to. Just like any peep sight, you look thru them. You won't get target accuracy, even if your eyes would allow it. But they sure do line up fast. This year, I want to try and get a pig using my Blackhawk. Only problem is, the kids keep gettin in the way.

I also like the "one raggedhole" sight - I have them on my BFR's - the sight is very fast for "ole eyes" and you can get on target a whole lot faster, especially if it's moving. I wouldn't order from their websight, as Rio suggested because the owner is currently injured or ill according to some of the forums I visit and no one seems to be obtaining their order - I should add that their credit card isn't being charged either or their checks haven't been cashed. I purchased my sights from http://www.warrencustomoutdoor.com/eezox.html - He normally has a few in stock and if you leave a message he will call you back - very good customer service. He's also a supplier of Eezok, which I'm sure most of you know prevents rust better than Break Free CLP and probably lubricates as good as CLP. Some of our men serving in the sand box prefer it, as it dries and doesn't collect dust and dirt as readily as Break Free does but then again, it isn't an issue item, so they either have to bring it with them or obtain it via mail. I've used Break Free for many years and like it - just purchased a quart of the Eezok and will now use that until I run out and then there may be a better product on the market by then.

I'm not sure that a 9/32 or 7/32 peep is going to do much for your field of focus or make things sharper,....what it does do is make it easy to get on target without having to wait for you eyes to adjust to the sights (as in the sharpness of the front sight and relation to lining up a front and rear sight, and the point of impact in relation to the point of aim))., and makes it easier to aquire and follow your target with both eyes open. For sure they are not for improving target shooting at great distances, but for their intended purpose and out to about 75 yds max, they certainly are better than most iron sights. They take a bit of practice and getting used to, but once that is accomplished, you'll want them on most revolvers you own. I don't have any on semi-automatics, or carry guns, because they do tend to snag on things.

FWIW, I didn't care for the ORHs on my Single Six or a couple other BlackHawks.....Remember: You are an arm's length away from the sight and it's a might small hole. I just gave mine away. I do, however, like the ORH I put on my 9422M and may get one for another Marlin now that they have them....
The bestest most nicest fasterthanhell sight on a handgun for me was the Burris SpeedDot I had on the 629, then the BFR.....

Well Blaine, it's like ruger480 explained - those sights take a little time to grow on ya. Shooting both eyes open and at moving targets to boot I like them. I have 66 year old eyes and iron sights just can't come close to giving me a good sight picture when shooting off-hand at anything not using the slow fire mode. I can shoot a lot better off-hand with the peep sights at all ranges than I can with the traditional iron sights. When shot from a rest - well, some days are better than others but in my opinion they are pretty close. I've heard the red dots are the cat's meow but haven't got around to using one yet. I'm really tempted to try the Jpoint because of the weight (1/2 ounce!) but I'm not all that excited about a 4moa dot. I'd put out some good money for a half ounce red dot having a 1 moa dot.
