I got a Marlin 1894, .44 Mag in trade today. I picked up a box of 240 JSP ammo to play with, and about 1 in 3 jammed up when feeding. They are jamming on the top entrance to the barrel. How to cure?

I am hoping by now you've got it figured out. First thing is to clean the gun from one end to the other. Dirty innards lag and a lag in any moving part can cause a jam.

Does it do it if you cycle very slowly, in the upright position? If not then you will need but a little tweaking after doing the above first.

Sometimes all it takes is a little stoning on the lifter. Most often it is the lead on the chambers mouth is too sharp. It can be reached with a dremel tool and if you are careful you can put a small radius on it. This is sometimes what causes it as the sharp edge cuts into the bullet or case mouth and causes the jam.

I sent my new 1894FG back to the factory for this exact same issue. They repaired it for free, except for the shipping (the box for the rifle cost more than the ground shipping) to Marlin and never a jam since. I wouldn't fool with it, let the pros do it right the first time.

Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too tired to fight he will just kill you.

A gun is like a parachute: If you need one and don't have one, you won't ever need one again.
