I am getting my first 45-70 cal.Its a Win.1886 TD & I would like to know what improvements I should make to make it a good hunting rifle? Trigger work, etc. What factory Ammo do you recommend? What about the rebounding hammer/firing pin? What are people talking about? Thanks-Tim

Tim, that's a very fine gun. I shot Blaine's and there's nothing I can see that it needs. It seemed to group minute-of-deer out to 140 yards shooting offhand.

I can't remember if it has a peep sight or not, that's the only thing I think improves those rifles.

Suggest you go out and shoot it and carry it around and see how the sights suit you. I wouldn't worry about the rebounding hammer and trigger yet. You might discover it's not an issue.

You can search for info on converting them with Browning parts if you decide to.

You are in for an entire barrel of fun, and then some.

The rebounding hammer can turn out to be a real problem, but an be easily fixed. Simply cut the 'rebound' leg off the hammer strut.

Hard cocking and heavy trigger pull can be remedied by subsituting a Ruger BH hammer spring in place of the original.

The rebound fix also works for the new Winchester/Miroku '92s, but you have to be very careful not to cut off too much in the '92, or the strut will slip off the hammer.
