Reflex
the rifle is a Steyr big bore in 450 marlin
bullet is crater 2 - 550 gr
my question is
I alway loaded my big bore rifle with a powder charge up to the bullet base and put in the case with a 6 inches tube so the powder would be packed tight
in doing so I am able to use a light crimp and the bullet does not set back in case because the powder keep it from doing so during recoil
this little trick was taken from A Square reloading book
so to get around 1550 fps I will try IMR 4064 and similar burning rate powder
tried 4064 in a 450 case and with the 550 crater I am able to put 46 gr of IMR 4064 did not shoot in yet to much cold and snow here to do serious load development
in my 4570 48 gr of this powder gave me 1630 fps and very good accuracy
so could you tell me if you have experienced with 4064 and similar powder in the 450 marlin
thank you for your time

Hey canuck4570. Hope you are enjoying the .450. I didn't try 4064 when working up for my pressure runs. All of the math pointed to H322 so thats where I started. As it ended up the powder achieved the velocity I was looking for and still cushioned the back of the bullet to prevent setback under recoil. I don't see any reason why 4064 wouldn't work though. It is considerably slower than H322 but the bulk should keep you out of trouble. reflex264

I Reflex
I am burning with eagerness to try my steyr
spring is here and warm enough whether soon to do some load development
will post all my finding
I did not know that with some load that the H322 was up to the bottom of the bullet
nice to know will give it a try but as you say I will be careful
did not find Federal 210m primers but will try CC1 match unless you have a better suggestion
has said earlier this rifle feed the crater 2 bullet so easily that I wonder if it did pick up a round and fead it in the chamber
also the scope is a plus for shooting long distances accurately
range report and pics to come
thanks again Reflex
canuck

I can't wait to see how that critter shoots. One thing I didn't mention is that with the Crater2 the extra powder capacity can be utilized and still stay in safe pressures. I experimented intensly with my 45/70 Ruger #1 and the 550gr crater2. You can start with H322 at 40grs and start easing up watching for primer flattening in your bolt gun .450. More than likely you will hit about 1650fps and the poder will be right at the base of the bullet with no compression. May not hold the bullet completely but would save it from shoving the bullet all the way back in the case. reflex264

this is getting more and more interesting
check to OAL I could load in the rifle by putting a bullet in chamber and you know measuring with the loading rod and then on the bolt closed thing
well I have plenty of room not like the 4570 chamber on my ruger no 1
don't worry you will be the first to see the performance of this rifle with pics......

Thanks for the update. I am working on another theory with your chamber. Do you have any of the regular 550gr Craters? reflex264
